Mission 02: Deliberate Acts of Kindness

Have you ever received an unexpected letter in the mail? Has a stranger ever covered your train or bus fare? Has a friend ever given you a needed but unanticipated hug? Each are small, but significant acts. They are powerful enough to change the course of your day.

What if such acts of kindness happened more often?

For the next two weeks, add one intentional act of kindness to each day.

Examples include:

  • Offer an compliment.
  • Write a short letter.
  • Give a hug.
  • Pay for a stranger’s coffee.
  • Say thank you.
  • Make a phone call.
  • Bake someone cookies.
  • Carry someone’s groceries.

The point is intention. You probably do many of these already. But if you’re like me, you may not pause to reflect on what’s happening. So as you participate in this mission, pay attention.

Notice how the person reacts. Depending on the situation, this may not be possible. But most of the time, you’ll get some feedback.

Notice how you feel – before, during, immediately afterwards, and through the rest of your day.

Report back in the comments what you did and what you learned.

PS: Feel free to adjust the experiment as needed to suit you and your current circumstances.
